Chernobyl Diaries

Posted on May 19th, 2012 by waratte

Chernobyl Diaries

What is it?

It’s a movie loosely about the after-effects of the Chernobyl disaster… In fact, it’s not really about it at all!

Six (Most likely American) tourists hire a tour guide to guide them, despite warnings, the tour guide takes around the abandoned city of Pripyat, Ukraine! :o

Then, they suddenly become stranded in the city! Oh no! Then, get this, they are being hunted by “strange beings, who appear to have mutated due to radiation exposure, that now live in the city.” Scary!

Ahhh!!! The darkness is chasing us!!

They must escape by hiking to the outer regions of the city. Which, if you watched movies before, some of them obviously die. So, not everyone survives.

YouTube comment:
The black guy dies first, it’s just so early in the movie that he’s not shown in the trailer.

Which is a T.V. trope:  http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlackDudeDiesFirst

This movie is based on another movie which is way too similar ( and by the same director and cast too  ): http://www.aceshowbiz.com/movie/diary_of_lawson_oxford_the/

The film centers on a group of friends who become stranded in an eerie and desolate city. Abandoned years before in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, nature has begun to reclaim everything. As the sun sets on this radioactive ghost town, inhuman cries cut through the night air. It seems they are not alone.

Trailers?

Here’s one:

Trailer

If you notice, the movie transitions from a nice, happy mood to the “horror/thriller” mood we are all used to. Movies like this almost always follow this format.

Also, this movie was actually shot in Pripyat by the way.

So, is anyone going to see this movie? It seems okay. It’s in release for the US, Canada, and Bulgaria.

I’m thinking that other movie will be released world-wide, and won’t have anything to do with the Chernobyl Disaster as some kind of sister film. Just a thought though…

A great evil falls before us!

Posted on May 14th, 2012 by waratte

Friends, great evil falls before us! The blog is infested with spam and I really have no idea what to do now. Captcha isn’t working! I don’t understand why. Does anyone have any solutions to this problem? Or, should I just close the comments section and leave a link to the discussion in the forums? :???:

Also, I’ve deleted all of your accounts while trying to fix up the blog and the forums like this…

Google Play

Posted on March 30th, 2012 by waratte

Well guys, it seems Google has recently added to it’s global empire. Google has just launched it’s “new” application, Google Play.

Google Play Logo

They could have chosen a better name...

In a nutshell, Google Play is basically Android Market, but it can be accessed from various devices and computers that can access the web.

Wikipedia article on it:

 -

Google Play is a digital content service from Google which includes an online store for music, movies, books, and Android apps and games, as well as a cloud media player. The service is accessible from the web, mobile app Play Store on Android, and Google TV. Purchased content is available across all of these platforms/devices. Google Play was introduced in March 2012 when Google rebranded its predecessor Android Market and Google Music services.

The forums are now fixed!

Posted on March 4th, 2012 by

Yep, it’s official! I have finally decided to fix the forums for good, the right way!

This means no more bugs, no more errors, no more problems! Especially, since I’ve decided to finally back up my forums’ software. I know that I’ve should have done this before, don’t remind me. As long as I’ve done it now, right?

Also, the forums sports a new Google search bar:

My reasoning behind adding this new feature to the forums is that:

  1. This will lessen the load on the server, since everyone will be using that to search the board.
  2. This will possibly better the site’s listing in Google, since people will be using this more often.

Hopefully, this will live up to my expectations. :D

Waratte’s break is almost over!

Posted on February 24th, 2012 by

As some of you may know, I took a break from the forums for about 5 days now, expecting to return early Sunday (Feb. 26!).

Here’s my original post on the forums:

1 week, I’ll be back in one week. (On the 28 of February in Japan)

Why am I leaving? I need to get things done:

  • Homework
  • The RPG mod for phpBB3 (which is installable now. :D)
  • PS Vita wiki
  • ??? (Japanese) studies
  • Allegro Tutorials
  • Blog
  • PHP5/CSS/HTML/ECMAscript knowledge

These forums are complete, so it can hold off on it’s own without me watching it 24/7. I need other portions of the site to catch up obviously, like the PS Vita wiki. Which is so behind in information it’s almost sad. :(

I also need to progress more on my other projects.

The RPG mod will hopefully bring in lots more visitors -> which will much more likely make members -> They will stay to play this game -> game requires forum points to get items/weapons/etc in the game -> People post more in the forums -> Forums look much more active, which will attract even more visitors -> the cycle starts again.

Allegro tutorials will hopefully attract more programmers, especially those interested in Allegro 5 since there aren’t a lot of A5 tutorials out now.

The wiki won’t really do much, except attract users needing help with their Vita (Not everyone wants to wait on a forum post).

The blog needs more activity and maybe a portal. :D

Anyways, I’ll be gone from this site for a week.

Please post plenty (no pressure though! :D), I’d hate to see this when coming back:

Who was here?
In total there was … nobody online :: 0 registered, 0 hidden, 0 bots and 0 guests (based on users active over the past week)Registered users: *cough* *cough*

I took this break solely in order to get some things done. I’ve progress on a few things, made some tutorial, can’t wait until I return! :D

Vita First Edition Bundle

Q: What are the advantages of choosing the 3G/Wi-Fi model of PS Vita? What will I get with it that I can’t get with the Wi-Fi model?
A: With access to AT&T Broadband Network you can game with real-time connection, immediately socialize with your gaming community through news feeds, multiplayer game sessions, and compete for in-game achievements (Trophies). You can also stay up-to-date with continuous LiveArea news feeds, and cross-game text messaging with Party. 3G connectivity also benefits social apps such as Facebook, Twitter, foursquare, Skype and more, all optimized specifically for PS Vita.

PS Vita 3G/Wi-Fi model also includes GPS for the most accurate geo-location reading, giving you an advantage when using “near” in that you can interact when you’re away from a Wi-Fi hotspot, whether you’re scooping up new track parts for ModNation Racers or accepting a new lap-time challenge in WipEout 2048.

Q: Do all PS Vita users have to sign up with a cell phone provider?
A: No. Users can enjoy either model of PS Vita using only Wi-Fi functionality.

Q: What is “near”?
A: “near” is PS Vita’s integrated social networking app that enables you to check in to real-life locations and pick up or leave gifts for other gamers to find and use in their games. You can also locate and connect with your PlayStation Network friends and other gamers nearby for ad-hoc communication and multiplayer sessions, whether you set up lap-time challenges in WipEout 2048 or trade costumes with a competitor in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Using “near,” you can also see which games are the most popular and highest rated by fellow gamers near your location, which can help you locate new and interesting games..

”near” can calculate your location using a Wi-Fi location service; the 3G/Wi-Fi model includes GPS technology, which enables you to be the first to find valuable game gifts by logging into “near” via 3G with more precision…and no need to wait for a Wi-Fi hot spot!

Q: Do you need 3G network connection to enjoy “near”?
A: No. PS Vita users can enjoy “near” using Wi-Fi, but a 3G connection is preferred in order to maximize “near”’s capability. By using a 3G connection, users will be able to obtain more information and encounter new players in real time via “near”. Think of it as a geo-social gaming network that taps into your location, wherever you might be.

Q: What kinds of “gifts” can you give and receive using “near”?
A: ”near” enables PS Vita owners to access virtual game-related items that other users are sharing by checking in at geographic locations that other PS Vita users have also visited. The virtual items can come in many forms: new character costumes, weapons, and treasures, just to name a few. Sharing these items between users adds a unique dimension to the portable gaming experience on PS Vita while enhancing the social connectivity among the PS Vita community.

Q: What is “LiveArea”?
A: Every PS Vita game features a space called “LiveArea” where you can access new game information from Sony Computer Entertainment and third-party developers and publishers via PlayStation Network. You’ll also be able to view an “Activity” log that includes your PSN Friends, which is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which in turn can trigger active real-time communication and gameplay among users.

Q: What is “Party”?
A: “Party” brings the flexibility and power of cross-game chat or text chat to PS Vita’s online gaming, and it’s available even when users are playing different games or using different applications such as the Internet browser . Users who are chatting together can also seamlessly join an online game to play together, making it easy to hop into a quick match of Unit 13 or wipEout 2048. You’ll also be able to bookmark your favorite groups so you can easily reconnect with them later. Combined with near, a powerful geo-social gaming network, Party will give PS Vita owners more options to interact, communicate, and compete than ever before.

Q: What system software will come pre-loaded on the final retail version of PS Vita in North America?
A: PS Vita comes pre-installed with Welcome Park, “near,” “Party,” Trophies, Friends, PlayStation Store, Remote Play, Video player, Music player, Photos and Camera, Group Messaging, and Content Manager.

Q: What is PS Vita’s battery life?
A: Officially, PS Vita is rated at approximately 3 to 5 hours of gaming, 5 hours of video playback, and 9 hours of music playback. Recharging the battery from 0 percent will take approximately 2.5 hours.

From a gaming perspective, you’ll notice that the most graphically intense games such as UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss are slightly more demanding on battery life, while simpler games such as Escape Plan are less demanding. To further maximize battery life, you can employ measures such as reducing the screen’s brightness or deactivating Wi-Fi. By and large, PlayStation employees who have used PS Vita extensively in the real world have praised the unit’s battery life – if you pick up PS Vita on day one, be sure to let us know what your experiences are.

Q: Do you have any plans to introduce a video output cable? Will PS Vita have HDMI output?
A: No, PS Vita does not have a video output feature.

Q: Can you take out the battery from the system?

Allegro tutorials!

Posted on February 5th, 2012 by

Recently, I have made some allegro tutorials for the PC.

If don’t know what Allegro is, here’s a Wikipedia excerpt on it:

Allegro is software library for video game development. The functionality of the library includes support for basic 2D graphics, image manipulation, text output, audio output, midi music, input and timers, as well as additional routines for fixed-point and floating-point matrix arithmetic, unicode strings, file system access, file manipulation, data files, and (limited, software-only) 3D graphics. The library is written in the C programming language and designed to be used with C or C++. It comes with extensive documentation and many examples.

As of version 4.0, programs that use the library work on DOS, Microsoft Windows, BeOS, Mac OS X, and various Unix-like systems with (or without) X Window System, abstracting their application programming interfaces (APIs) into one portable interface. There is also an independent port of Allegro on AmigaOS 4. Version 5.0 supports Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Unix-like systems, and iOS.

Released under the terms of the zlib license, Allegro is free and open source software.

Although they are relatively short (Only one series so far and about 6 tutorials) and I have hastily written them, they are still a good read if you’re a C++ programmer looking for an easy engine to program your games. :D

Looking back…

Posted on January 25th, 2012 by

“To Long; didn’t read” summary at the bottom of this post.

Today as I look back on my website, I have seen that we’ve come a long way! We have members, posts, comments, activity, regular users; just to name a few.

I can’t believe I got this site listed on one of the biggest web-crawlers.

I can’t believe I got this site listed on the search engines.

I can’t believe I got activity.

I can’t believe I actually have members.

I can’t believe I actually made this work.

I can’t believe that we were actually a small site a year ago. It wasn’t even under my persona, it was Kidz Axe’s (Now, Awesomeist on the forums) website.

I can’t believe my idea of starting my own website (waratte.tk) in lieu of Kidz Axe’s website being shut down would go this far!

I can’t believe I kept going despite my troubles (site being deleted without warning, account being terminated; don’t ever use 000webhost, ever). I have ASKidwai to thank for that, he convinced me to keep going.

I can’t believe that we are where we are now, it we are still improving! We’re getting new images put up everywhere and the site is coming up together nicely! Sooner or later, we will be a big site!

I can’t believe it! :D

 Thanks you all! :D

Now, my updates and tweaks for the site are almost complete! Just a few more things will really set this site off for excellence. I’ve finally got all the banner across all of the three major sections of my site: The Forums, The Blog, and The PSVita Wiki. I have a standard for content size across the three of them (1024 pixels wide). I also have  the same background for the former two.

The forums has all of it mods working perfectly together, we have a nice Arcade, nice members, tolerable activity, great discussions; just to say the least. ;-) This is in the process of becoming even better now thanks to me7i’s idea to personalize the images. Thanks me7i.

The blog hasn’t changed much accept for those changes explained up there. The blog was pretty much the most “complete” part of the site anyways.

The wiki changed a little, just a different theme and the changes described above. All it needs now are some willing Wiki writers. ;)

 For TL;DR:

 Site is good. Thanks everyone.

Allegro tutorials up and going!

Posted on January 20th, 2012 by

This is just a little announcement for those of you who are interested in Allegro, which is a very excellent game engine. I especially like it for it’s simplicity and conciseness. I’ve decided to share this joy with everyone by creating series of tutorials for Allegro 5, the latest branch of the Allegro family.

Though for now, there is only a small number of tutorials available. One reason is because I’ve only started this recently, two, I’m not receiving much feedback on them so it’s not as much as a priority as the other items on my “TODO” list. :(

Also, currently I only have a set up tutorial for those who are using Windows; though with a little manipulation, you can install easily on other systems it seems. In fact, the installation process is even easier with OSes like Ubuntu for example. Just install it through a package manager I believe.

There are currently 3 tutorials up right now and as I type this, I’m making up a new one. I’m hoping to finish the first series sometime this week if I’m not busy or sleepy. There also won’t be a set time for me releasing a tutorial, I’ll release whenever I get to it.

What I hope to cover after this introduction series (basic knowledge, getting you used to Allegro 5′s API/code) is much more than what you’d expect when looking for a Allegro tutorial. I hope to cover many topics outside of Allegro: like game programming, techniques, Artificial Intelligence, path finding algorithms, and one day we might create a simple Rougelike RPG if I ever get to it. I’m busy you know, :P .

Hope to see you visit, and comment on my tutorial! :D

January 18th is Stop SOPA day. Join us by blacking out your site with a simple and easy to use
SOPA Blackout JS Utility

Earlier this week, Reddit.com announced that they would be blacking out their site on January 18th. Likewise, many of us should take similar action versus this bill. The damage it would cause to our internet infrastructure would be irreparable. What we propose is a simple, but effective message for any webmasters to use on their site on this date.

How to use

The following will present a blackout banner when users visit your site, which can be circumvented by clicking anywhere:

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”//js.sopablackout.org/sopablackout.js”></script>

The following will blackout an element of a specific id:

<script type=”text/javascript”>sopablackout_id = ‘sopa’;</script>
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”//js.sopablackout.org/sopablackout.js”></script>

Other advanced variables:

sopablackout_srsbzns = true; // Disables the click through
sopablackout_on = [2012, 1, 18]; // Fire only on this local date

So, everything will be back to normal on the 19th EST; hopefully. ;-)

PSVita’s HBL FAQ

Posted on January 10th, 2012 by

Today at Wololo’s blog, Wololo himself wrote up a quick F.A.Q (or Frequently Asked Questions for technical people) for the port of HBL he’s working on for the PSVita. Though, some of it is common sense (you’d be really ignorant to think you could play PSVita game backups with it), it is still a good read. So, here it is in verbatim (because typing is really hard for me, I like to copy-and-paste):

Wololo wrote:

We’ve seen through Teck4?s exploit that PSP exploits run flawlessly on the PSP emulator of the Vita. I’ve spent the past 3 weeks working on leveraging Teck4?s exploit and port HBL to it. I’ve been receiving lots of questions (probably from people who haven’t used HBL back when it was the only possible way to play homebrews on the PSP Go) and will try to answer them here.

What is HBL?

HBL stands for “Half Byte Loader”. This is a homebrew loader for the PSP, which was written initially by m0skit0, then improved and maintained by a bunch of devs including myself (those two links are good old memories, when HBL wasn’t loading a single homebrew properly). It basically allows to run fanmade games, emulators, etc… on the PSP. We’ve found that it can run on the PS Vita through the PSP emulator.
Will this allow to run PSP backups (isos)?

Although in theory that would be possible, HBL only has access to the PSP “user mode” which is fairly limited. Practically, all teams who have tried to create an iso loader in user mode on the PSP have failed so far.
Will this allow to run PS Vita game backups?

No
Does this give us access to the Vita hardware (touch screen, etc…)?

No. HBL accesses the hardware through the PSP emulator, and therefore only has access to what is mapped to the PSP controls. It also only has access to 32MB of ram, etc…
Does this give us possibilities to hack the vita further?

Most likely, not. HBL is stuck in user mode, in a sandboxed emulator. To get access to Vita information, we would need first to get kernel access in the emulator (through a psp kernel exploit), and then find other exploits in the emulator/OS itself to break away from the sandbox (which, if the Vita OS is as secure as I think it is, is close to impossible)
But will it give us more horsepower than the psp? Can we expect emulators to run faster, etc?

This still needs to be investigated deeper, but from what I’ve seen, not really. Memory stick access is definitely faster on the vita (Wagic loads between 5 and 10 times faster on the vita than on a psp go), but the rest seems to follow the psp limitations (as one would expect from an emulator)
Will this be made public?

Yes. Teck4 (who found the exploit) and I agreed to making this public at some point.
When will this be made public?

Some time after the Vita is released worldwide.
I heard Sony can patch this very easily as soon as it’s made public?

Yes. Since this uses a vulnerability in a PSP game, as soon as they know which game it is, Sony can remove the game from the PS Store. Once they do that, they can patch the Vita firmware to reject the “malicious” files (either by preventing them from being copied through the content manager assistant, or by patching the PSP emulator, or by patching the PSP game, etc…). At that point, people who don’t already have the game on their console won’t be able to use HBL. Also, people who do have HBL will need to never upgrade their firmware, will have to use some tools such as OpenCMA in order to copy files to the vita, and will be locked out of the PS Store as long as they want to use homebrews.
So shouldn’t you keep this under wraps instead?

Meh, it’s not like anything is really secret here besides the name of the game. It’s already pretty sure this is not useful for hacking the vita further, so even if it gets patched I don’t think we will lose “too much”.
No iso, no access to the vita internals, and Sony will patch it as soon as it’s out, so basically it’s useless?

Yes and No. Technically, a hacked PSP is way cheaper and will allow you to do more than that. But this is, as I write these lines, the only way to run unsigned code on the Vita, which in itself makes it a great achievement (and it’s always cool to show your friends that your Vita can run Mario, and theirs can’t). Also, it didn’t take too much time to adapt since most of the code was already available from our past work in the psp scene. It would have been even more useless to say “oh yeah, interesting, we can run psp exploits on the vita” and not do anything with it.

How do you copy/install homebrews to the ps vita, since it cannot be mounted as a regular usb drive?

This will be explained when HBL is released.

 Waratte’s thoughts:

Why won’t he explain that last one to us?! D: There must be something “fishy” goin’ on here…

Hidden menu system on the PSVita, PSP, and the PS3.

Posted on January 4th, 2012 by

A new post by Wololo today states that a certain key combination can be evoked on your PS Vita system to inhibit a “Hidden menu system” to appear.

Japanese site emuonpsp reported today that a combination of keys was found in the settings menu to display some hidden information about the firmware installed on your Playstation vita.

This menu contains information about the system build, repository, revision,… doesn’t look like it’s super useful information for now, but still interesting I guess.

The combination to get this menu to show requires practice but I could confirm it works on my vita (Firmware 1.510).
1. Go to Settings > System > System Information
2. Press simultaneously RTrigger + LTrigger + DPad Left + Square for a few seconds
3. Release those buttons then immediately press the start button
4. tadaa, additional information shows up

A PSVita

Pictured beneath the device: Secret plans?

Also, it seems that it works on the PSP also, as claimed by comments on that post:

hiro says:

works on psp as well (saw it on neur0n’s twitter). It shows the version text and a number at the top right.

Surprisingly enough, the PS3 as well:

deroad says:

also on the ps3 works!! http://ps3devwiki.com/index.php?title=More_System_Information

Waratte’s thoughts:

What are those plans of his under that device?

Who Am I? o.O

Posted on December 20th, 2011 by

Ever seen a guy who sits on computer whole day doing something on holiday and then knowing that he has done something stupid which he could do in 15mins and then regretting about it? Exploring net and getting knowledge which wasn’t necessary at all? Knows very much about Computers/Tech but doesn’t like to share his knowledge?

Ever seen a guy who eats and eats but still isn’t fat? Who while studying checks his Facebook notifications and maintains his group? Who like to talk hours when there’s a problem to the Help Center of the product? Who is very loyal to his friends but hesitates to make new friends?

Ever seen a guy who doesn’t care about cleanliness of his room but deletes unnecessary things from his computer even knowing he will need them later?  A guy who doesn’t like shopping for his cloths but but love to even window shop places with gadgets?

Ever seen a guy who has many gadgets and none of them run on their official OS/firmware but instead run custom rom or hacks? Who hacks(running stuff which isn’t allowed by the system software), patches, tweaks etc  every gadget he gets even it’s not his!

Ever seen a guy who is so interested in writing for you guys that he wrote all this while travelling in the car?

No doubt its me! :p  I don’t usually praise myself  BTW!  So, From now on I’m in waratte’s author team! And  I look forward to write here about, umm…whatever I find interesting! :D You can contact me by PMing me on waratte’s forum or email me at admin@geek2day.com !

ASKidwai is flabbergasted

Posted on December 12th, 2011 by

The bell rung. That is a fairly common occurrence but what happened next really surprised me.

I answered the bell and saw a person standing at the door with an envelope, another common occurrence. I didn’t know the man, yet another common occurrence. The letter was for my father, yet another common occurrence.

He then gave me it and here comes the main part of this rather repetitive post: He introduced himself as a courier ¹, which are infrequent. He told me that he saw the letter on the road, some miles away and since he had come once or twice here, he felt it to be his moral duty to bring the letter to us.

Consider the situation, here was a man whom I did not know and have never seen, who had only heard my father’s name once or twice, had brought a letter on a road several miles away, for which he had no obligation at all, on a bicycle at three in the Indian afternoon. He was a private citizen and yet, he took all those pains just to bring a letter which did not concern him in anyway, without any thought of being paid, he even declined a drink. I was really humbled by that.

If he had left it on the road, who’d have blamed him? Hundreds of people go on that road in a single day, and no one actually concerns themselves with it.

I’m pleasantly surprised that there are still good people, who roam the earth and do little deeds. There was no compulsion for him to deliver it, he wasn’t even in charge on the letter.

I am rendered speechless.

And in this passing time, we are developing.

We currently have 3 authors; waratte, frank and I. I have no actual excuse except that I have been busy with guns, fun and exams as well as other stuff except coding. I haven’t done ANY coding since Tasbih, which was a pitiable excuse for a programme.

I have become rather self-hating, haven’t I?

Well,

Take care and see you soon

This site isn’t dead. (I know you did not say that but, you’re kinda implying that it is) It doesn’t matter if there are no blog posts from time to time, everyday. It’s still going to be actively worked upon.

As for me, I’ve been busy with school and other sections of the site. The blog itself is far ahead of the other sections of the site, I’m trying to catch them up. So, I did not post for awhile.

As for coding, I’m on my off period until exams are over, which is next week. I haven’t done much yet on Ichinichi due to many other responsibilities that I’ve should have done that I’m rushing to do now. Once my break begins, which is right after exams, I’ll be working extensively on Ichinichi to get it caught up with my other responsibilities here.

Anyways, take care all
